Eating Habits that are Good for Your Teeth

According to a survey conducted by the National Institute of Dental and Carniofacial Research, 5% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 years in the United States, had no teeth in their mouth, while about 25% had untreated decay in the gums.

Another study conducted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), titled Prevalence of Periodontitis in Adults in the United States: 2009 and 2010, revealed that about 47.2%, i.e., 64.7 million adults in America had mild, moderate or severe periodontitis. Among people above the age of 65 years, the decay rate further rises to 70%.

These figures represent our unhealthy eating habits and improper oral care. Being the most common chronic disease, tooth decay is further triggered by the choice of food items.

What are the Eating Habits That a Person Needs to Develop?

First of all, limit your snacks. Most of us have the tendency to nibble on different things throughout the day, which causes more harm to the teeth than regular meals. Saliva released during those meals is of greater quantity and washes the food particles down, lessening the effect of acids.

Drink plenty of water.

Switch you regular snacks for fruits and vegetables. They are healthy for your teeth as well as the body on the whole.

Eat more proteins, such as fish, meat, peas and dry beans.

Food Items that Lower the Risk of Decay

Sugary foods, such as candy and soda, lead to tooth decay, say experts at Revitalizing Smiles. Here are some items that you can include in you daily diet to counter the problem:

Cheese: The Journal of American Academy of General Dentistry gave us one more reason to love cheese when it revealed that eating cheese can raise the pH level in the mouth, lowering the risk of tooth decay. The calcium part also helps in strengthening the teeth.

Yoghurt: Another product that is rich in calcium and protein and helps in improving oral health is yoghurt. The probiotics found in yoghurt help in removing bacteria that cause cavities. Opt for a plain variety with no added sugar.

Carrots: Eating a few slices of carrot after the meal help increase the saliva in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities. They are also rich in fiber.
