Habit #1: Sugar

According to an article in Time, researchers looked at public health records from around the world and found 60 to 90% of school kids and 92% of adults in the US have had tooth decay. Compare that with a place like Nigeria, where their diet contains almost no sugar and only 2% of the population has had tooth decay. So if you want to keep smiling, it is time to stop the sweet stuff.
Habit #2: Smoke
Yes, it’s been said before but clearly not enough. Smoking causes bad breath, discoloured teeth, gum disease and finally oral cancer. According to the Web MD website, cigarette and cigar smokers face tooth loss and bone loss within the jawbone. Cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking leads to an increased risk of periodontal or gum disease. If you think smokeless tobacco products are better, think again. They have at least 28 chemicals known to cause oral cancer and cancer in the throat. Also, sugar is added to such products to enhance their flavour.
Habit #3: Nails
Those of us who do don’t even notice when we are; those who don’t notice it and think it disgusting. Nail-biting might not be everybody’s favourite habit but it sure is going to hurt your teeth. Firstly, your hands are the dirtiest parts of your body coming in contact with so many surfaces. Secondly, you could chip off the enamel of your teeth and finally, placing your jaw in that protruding position for long periods of time will cause jaw pain and problems with your temporomandibular joint. Let your imagination chew on that for a while.
Habit #4: Good Old Neglect
Each time you skip brushing your teeth or flossing, you are giving the bacteria and food particles in your mouth a day or nights backstage pass to party. At your expense, because tooth decay is the world’s most common non-infectious disease thanks to good old neglect.
